Everything You Need to Know About Towing a Trailer
Towing a trailer can be a great way to transport large loads or transport non-motorized recreation activities like boats, campers, and ATVs. However, it is important to understand the safety procedures for towing a trailer as well as the legal requirements of different states and provinces.
Understand Your Vehicle’s Towing Capacity
Before you hitch up your trailer, be sure to understand how much weight your vehicle can safely tow, which depends on the make and model of your vehicle. You should also factor in the additional weight added by cargo, passengers, fluids, and other items. If the loaded trailer exceeds the manufacturer’s recommended towing limit for your vehicle, you will be putting an excessive load on your car, which could lead to decreased performance or potential mechanical failures.
Make Sure Your Trailer Is Properly Set Up for Towing
After determining how much weight your vehicle can safely tow, be sure your trailer is set up correctly. Make sure the hitch and its ball mount are the correct type and size. Also, ensure that the trailer tires are in proper condition, with no bulges or cracking. A properly inflated tire will perform better on changing road surfaces and provide increased towing stability. Furthermore, check that all your lights are connected so you’re visible at night and check that the brakes on the trailer are operating correctly.
Check the Lights and Tire Pressure on the Trailer
Before you head out, be sure to check all of the lights on the trailer and make sure they are functioning properly. You should also inspect your trailer’s tires to make sure they are properly inflated. Having tire pressure that is too low can result in reduced handling ability and compromised braking. Conversely, overinflated tires can damage the sidewall of the tire and reduce its lifespan. Make sure all of your trailer’s tires are properly inflated before towing!
Look Out For Overloading and Potential Extension Breaks
When towing a trailer, it’s important to always avoid overloading and extension breaks. The maximum load for your trailer should be specified on the side of the trailer and you should never exceed this weight limit. Similarly, when making any turns or going up or down hills in a vehicle that is towing a trailer, make sure you don’t exceed any of the manufacturer-specified angles or heights as there may be potential extension breaks with the trailer deploying suddenly. Always use caution when towing your trailer!
Double-Check Connections Before Pulling Away from the Curb
When towing a trailer, always double check your safety connections before pulling away from the curb. Check that your trailer's weight capacity and tongue weight are evenly balanced and that the hitch is properly secured to the vehicle. Make sure the lights on the back of the trailer work, as well as any brakes or other safety features specified by your state. Once those have been checked, you’re ready to pull away – be safe out there!
