Comparing Torsion vs. Spring Axle: What You Need to Know
If you are purchasing a new trailer, it is important to know the differences between torsion and spring axles. From weight capacity to flexibility, breaking down the pros and cons of each axle type can help you decide which one best suits your needs.
Understand the Basics: Torsion vs. Spring Axle.
Torsion and spring axles are two of the most popular types of trailer axles. A torsion axle works by floating on rubber cords that bend to absorb bumps in the road, while spring axles are essentially metal coils that support a vehicle's weight and cushion the ride. Both are designed to carry loads up to a certain capacity but there is still a debate as to which type is better for heavier vehicles or tougher terrain.
Comparing the Deflection of Each Axle Style.
Both torsion and spring axles provide good amounts of deflection, which is the measure of an axle's ability to absorb road bumps. The advantage of torsion axles is that they can flex more than lightweight leaf springs, whereas spring axles have a higher capacity for carrying heavier loads. As a result, it depends on what type of vehicle you are driving as well as what types of terrain you’ll be dealing with when choosing between the two types.
Analyzing the Weight & Load Restrictions of Both Axles.
Torsion axles are able to easily handle vehicles that weigh 8,000 lbs., but typically have a load limit of 7,500 lbs. This is because torsion axles work best when there is an even distribution of weight across all points of the axle. On the other hand, leaf springs offer a higher capacity for heavier loads and can support up to 10,000 lbs. Regardless of the type of axle you choose, it's important to keep in mind that loading your vehicle with additional weight beyond what the axle was designed to carry will reduce its life specifically due to increased wear and tear on vehicle suspension parts.
How to Determine Which Type of Axle Is Right for Your Trailer?
When choosing between a torsion or spring axle, you should consider the weight capacity and balance of your vehicle. If you're looking for a more even distribution of weight, then a torsion axle may be the right choice. But if you require a higher capacity to carry heavy loads, then leaf springs are likely the right solution. It's also important to think about other factors like the intended application and road conditions when selecting an axle type.
